Local Buyer's Guide

Where to buy turquoise in Kingman, AZ.

The stone is mined right outside this town. That should make buying easy. It doesn't always — here's why, and where to go.

The turquoise actually comes from here

Kingman turquoise is mined in the Kingman district — Ithaca Peak, Mineral Park — out in Mohave County. It's not a marketing name. The stone has its own look: deep blue with brown or black matrix, sometimes with copper-colored streaks that are pretty specific to this region. Collectors know it. If you're going to buy Kingman turquoise anywhere, buying in Kingman is the logical place to do it.

That said, being in Kingman doesn't automatically mean you're getting the real thing. Route 66 runs right through downtown, and tourist traffic means there are sellers who count on people not knowing what they're looking at. Most "turquoise" sold in gift shops and souvenir stands along Beale Street is dyed howlite or magnesite — white stone dyed blue. It looks similar at a glance. It is not turquoise.

What we carry and how we operate

We're Kingman Turquoise & Jewelry at 407 E Beale St — right on Historic Route 66, in downtown Kingman. Open Monday through Saturday, 11 AM to 5 PM. Closed Sundays.

Every piece in our cases is genuine Kingman turquoise. We carry rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and pieces made by Indigenous artisan silversmiths. We also do in-house repair — ring sizing, stone setting, restringing, watch batteries.

When you ask us whether a stone is natural or stabilized, we'll tell you straight. When you ask where it came from, we can tell you the mine district. We price natural and stabilized material differently because they're worth different amounts, and we'd rather you know what you're buying than feel deceived later.

We've got 4.9 stars across 70+ reviews. That's not a number we're going to risk over a single sale.

What to watch out for along Route 66

If you're driving through and stopping at gift shops along the way, ask before you buy. The two questions that matter: is this natural or stabilized turquoise, and what mine district did it come from? A seller who knows their material answers both without hesitating. A vague answer — "it's real turquoise from the Southwest" — is a tell.
